MLTW/Turnbull Associates. 1973

The UC Santa Cruz campus program called for a residential college as a "non-institutional" alternative to typical university classrooms and residences to be built within a very tight budget. The design resulted in small, two-story buildings grouped along a pedestrian pathway sited to respect the redwood trees and terrain. This pedestrian street creates a unique series of public spaces and a center where people can meet, organizing and enriching college life in much the same manner that a street does for village life. It received the AIA California Council's Twenty-Five Year Award in 2003.
