Located in the hills above St. Helena on a south-facing slope, the house, built for a retired couple, addresses easy mobility with minimal level changes. Recalling the stone terracing sometimes found in vineyards, the hillside is terraced with two stone walls to create a plateau for the house, outdoor spaces and lap pool. The house itself is a 1500 square foot wooden framework that spans between the upper and lower walls and is anchored by the massing of the stone fireplace in the center of the house. |
