"Hillside architecture is landscape gardening around a few rooms for use in case of rain." This quote, which epitomizes Charles Keeler's and Bernard Maybeck's philosophy of California architecture, is the inspiration for this project. Only 640 square feet, this deceptively simple house combines architecture and landscape to make large rooms out-of-doors. It is sited on a bench, the only flat area in a rolling 20-acre hillside vineyard that looks out to Mt. St. Helena. | |
