The Oaks, a proposed 18 unit affordable and senior housing project, is located within easy walking distance of Calistoga’s historic town center. The vacant .68 acre infill parcel gently slopes down to the Napa River and has beautiful views of the hills to the west and across the valley to the east. Two mature stands of oaks edge opposite corners of the property. Set in a block of mixed uses ranging from residential to service commercial and retail, the challenge was to create a community of 18 units with 30 parking spaces that visually reflected Calistoga’s small town character.

Our solution was to develop a mix of economical modular housing units linked by more detailed exteriorstairs and porches. The project continues the small scale street front development along Washington Street and has a community room at ground level. The units are arranged in a ‘U’ shape that opens outto the river allowing for everyone to have visual access to the common space along the river. Eight of the units are two bedroom townhomes and utilize tuck under tandem parking to minimize the effect of parking on the site. The other ten units are stacked two bedroom modular flats and open directly to a landscaped pedestrian path that leads from Washington Street to the Napa River.

The gable roofed houses and porches are reminiscent of the earlier vernacular and Victorian housing found throughout Calistoga. Clad with board and batten siding and single hung windows the Oaks is designed to be a good neighbor and create a wonderful setting for living in Calistoga.
