The Hamlin School / info >

Since 1923 the Hamlin School, an independent elementary school for girls, has occupied Stanwood Hall, an historic mansion built in 1901 on Broadway in San Francisco. The school later built two additional buildings stepping down its steep site to accommodate its growing needs. We renovated Stanwood Hall, which still had the wallpapered bedrooms and claw foot bath tubs from its days as a residence, to make it seismically safe, wheelchair accessible and to better serve the educational needs of the community. We moved the library to the entry level of the mansion to emphasize the educational mission of the school. New, specially designed classrooms replaced the existing makeshift adaptations in the mansion. We also renovated and reorganized the lower two buildings to provide more community gathering spaces and a glazed outdoor courtyard.
