The Allewelt residence is an oasis of layered shade and shadow constructed on a parched, treeless site in the hot Central Valley of California. The center of this 3000 square foot house is opened to the sky, with a slatted section of the roof creating changing shadow patterns below and funneling summer breezes through the house. This outdoor passageway divides the house into two distinct dwellings: to the north, the adults' world with kitchen, dining and living space; to the south, the children's bedrooms and their own private living room.
